What to expect when you return to campus for: Students | Prospective Students | Employees

In an effort to remain consistent with our Jesuit and Mercy mission and values, and to ensure that we work together for the safety of the Detroit Mercy community, these guidelines were prepared based on the requirements of the state of Michigan’s public health directives issued by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and in alignment with the Michigan Safe Start: A Plan to Re-Engage Michigan's Economy. Coordinators have been identified by each University dean and vice president to lead the efforts within their respective areas using the policies and protocols in the guide.

Enhanced social distancing

As employees, students, contractors and guests return to campus, we will implement the necessary protocols to help ensure the health and well-being of our community.

For this reason, all employees, students, contractors, and guests, when possible, must observe a 14-day period of “enhanced social distancing” at home before arriving to any of the Detroit Mercy campuses.

During this 14-day period, you need to monitor your health, reduce your contact with others and follow guidance consistent with recommendations from the CDC, including:

  • Staying home and avoiding contact with others outside of your home.
  • Taking your temperature two times a day and monitor for fever.
  • Watching for COVID-19 symptoms, including cough or trouble breathing.
  • Avoiding public transportation, taxis or ride-shares.
  • Maintaining a physical distance from others of about 6 feet.
  • Wearing a face-covering when in public settings or while interacting with others outside of the home.
  • Seeking medical attention if you develop a fever, other symptoms and/or test positive for COVID-19. Do not come to campus until you receive further instructions.

Considerations when developing departmental protocols

Individual areas and departments will have protocols or plans specific to their areas developed by supervisors that must be followed. In developing procedures, consider the following:

  • Unit or department closures due to a confirmed case of COVID-19
  • Distribution of responsibilities with a reduced workforce
  • Deep cleaning or other protocols necessary to return to work
  • Communication with other departments due to a change or reduction in services

As individual departments and units develop policies unique to their area, please note that the requirements outlined in this document apply to all individuals returning to campus for fall term.

Thank you for your cooperation, input and patience during this unprecedented time. As more information becomes available and regulations change, we will modify the facilities, health and safety policies. This working document provides the framework needed to prepare our campuses for our employees, students, contractors and guests. The policies and protocols apply to all employees, students, contractors and guests.

    On-Site Protocols and Etiquette

    Each University area, school or college may implement area-specific requirements as necessary to maintain the safety of our University community.  While on campus, all individuals must:

    • Wear a face-covering (see face-covering section below)
    • Comply with social distancing protocols.
      • Maintain a minimum of six feet (or the length of two arms) of distance between you and anyone around you.
      • Face-coverings must be worn with proper placement over the nose and mouth.
      • Do not gather in large groups and avoid crowded locations.
    • Wash hands for at least 20 seconds with warm, soapy water:
      • Upon entering a space (when possible)
      • Before and after removing your mask
      • Prior to eating
      • After blowing your nose
      • After sneezing, coughing or touching your face
    • Adhere to building signage guidelines.

    Additional safeguards and etiquette to practice while on campus include:

    • Avoid sharing work materials and office supplies unless disinfected between use.
    • Maintain a clean desk. Wipe down keyboards/mouse, doorknobs, etc.
    • Use personal coolers to avoid crowding in break areas, office kitchenettes and near employee refrigerators.
    • Bring large water bottles from home or use bottle fillers without touching the tap. (Drinking fountains will be turned off.)
    • Enable natural workplace ventilation when possible.
    • Utilize Microsoft Teams, Zoom or other virtual platforms for group meetings, especially when social distancing cannot be achieved.
    • Carry your face-covering with you at all times, even if you do not anticipate interacting with others.
    • Do not touch your face.
    • Limit the number of times you leave and return to campus during your work- or school-day.
    • Avoid touchscreens or touch panels. If a touch pad is used, wear gloves and/or disinfect it before and after use.
    • If you are able, use stairs instead of elevators.
      • No more than one person may enter an elevator at a time. If you must use an elevator, wear your face-covering and avoid touching the elevator buttons with an exposed hand/finger. Wash hands upon departing the elevator.
    • Use the Contact Tracing Log (or any method of documentation) to track continuous or close contact with others.
    • Keep updated on the changing policies and regulations from the University and the state of Michigan.
    • Recognize some of these guidelines are temporary, and our small part can make a big difference.

    Travel Policy

    Business Travel

    University-related business travel has been suspended until at least December 31, 2020.

    Personal Travel

    The University encourages you to consider the possible impact of traveling outside of the state of Michigan during this pandemic. If you must travel, adhere to the following COVID-19 guidelines while traveling:


    If an employee has traveled internationally or domestically outside the state of Michigan, it may be necessary to adhere to stay-at-home quarantine procedures for a minimum of 14 days upon return. Travel restrictions do not apply to individuals commuting from their home.

    Before you travel, discuss with your supervisor your return to campus plan, and contact Human Resources (313-993-1036) for direction on COVID-19 traveling guidelines. 

    Upon return from travel (within 24 hours) and prior to the return to campus, an employee must contact Human Resources (hr@udmercy.edu) to discuss possible COVID-19 testing. Employees are required to test negative based on recommendations from the CDC.  All employees must have HR clearance before returning to campus.


    If an student has traveled internationally or domestically outside the state of Michigan, they shall adhere to the stay-at-home quarantine procedures for a minimum of 14 days upon return or have a negative COVID test.  Students must contact the Wellness Center (313-993-1185) to discuss and coordinate. Travel restrictions do not apply to individuals commuting from their home.

    If a student is registered for face-to-face classes they should contact their instructor(s) to make arrangements for online learning during the quarantine period.

    For on-campus residential students, stay-at-home quarantine will be coordinated with Residence Life and take place in on-campus housing.

    If within the 14-day period the individual becomes symptomatic, he/she needs to get tested for COVID–19. Contact the Wellness Center for testing sites and for proper protocol. View Contact Tracing on the Titans Together webpage.

    COVID -19 symptoms include:

    • Temperature of 100.4 degrees or higher
    • Fever, chills, fatigue, muscle or body aches and headache
    • New cough, new shortness of breath, sore throat, nasal congestion and runny nose
    • New loss of taste or smell
    • Nausea, vomiting and diarrhea


    • During this time, there should be limited to no physical interactions, both for your health and the health of others
    • Social distancing of a least six feet apart​
    • Utilizing face coverings, no unnecessary errands and avoid crowds​
    • Wash hands often and avoid touching one’s face​
    • Online learning is available until a student is allowed to return to class
    • Food delivery will be arranged for dorm residents

    Detroit Mercy employees have the opportunity to receive a COVID-19 test at the Michigan State Fair Grounds (FAQ on testing site).

    Testing for High-Risk Individuals

    Testing is encouraged for all high-risk employees, especially individuals who are in continuous contact with students and colleagues. High-risk employees include, but are not limited to, people who are above the age of 65, live in or frequent a nursing home or long-term care facility and people with underlying medical conditions. 

    Testing for Individuals Showing Symptoms

    If you are showing any of the following symptoms, it is imperative to contact:

    Symptoms include:

    • Cough
    • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
    • Fever
    • Chills
    • Repeated shaking with chills
    • Runny nose or new sinus congestion
    • Muscle Pain
    • Headache
    • Sore throat
    • Fatigue
    • New GI symptoms
    • New loss of taste or smell

    If testing is recommended or required, please contact the Human Resources Department at 313-993-1036 for the access code information. For students who require tests, please contact the Wellness Center at 313-993-1185.

    Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry employees and students will be instructed separately on COVID-19 testing protocol.


    Daily Screening Assessment

    Before arriving on campus, all employees, students and guests should conduct a daily self-screening for COVID-19 symptoms. Students and staff living on campus should perform a daily self-assessment before leaving their living quarters.

    Please click on and open: www.udmercy.edu/covidapp for daily pre-screening questions. Individual departments may add additional screening assessments based on the program.

    You may be asked screening questions or have your temperature taken by the Department of Public Safety at the entrance to the any of the Detroit Mercy campuses. If an individual records a temperature of 100.4 degrees or higher, entry to campus will be denied. Employees excluded from campus should notify their supervisor, Human Resources, College or School, or host.

    Do not come to campus if you have a temperature of 100.4 degrees or higher. Employees with temperatures of 100.4 or higher must notify their supervisor and Human Resources; students should contact the dean or assistant or associate dean of Students/Student Affairs of their respective campus or follow other protocols as directed.

    Screening questions will include:

    1. Evidence of symptoms such as fever, coughing, shortness of breath, diarrhea, chills, muscle pain, headache, sore throat or new loss of taste or smell.
    2. Within the last 14 days, exposure to or in close contact with an individual diagnosed with COVID-19.
    3. International or domestic travel within the last 14 days.

    If individuals respond YES to any of the previous screening questions, the individual is excluded from the premises as follows:

    1. Seventy-two hours: If there is evidence of no fever for three days without the use of fever-reducing medications and improvement in other symptoms. In other words, you must be fever-free and symptom-free for at least three days before returning to campus.
    2. Fourteen days: If an individual has been in close contact with an individual diagnosed with COVID-19. (The first day counted is the day of diagnosis recognition.)
    3. Fourteen days: If an individual has completed international or domestic travel. Domestic travel is basically when individuals travels outside the State of Michigan.

    If an individual responds NO to all screening questions and has no fever, he or she may enter the campus.

    Save time at the gate by pre-answering the screening questions focused on symptoms.

Along with your face-covering, this dated email must be shown to the officer at the entrance of all three campuses. Please remember that your honesty in answering these screening questions helps to keep our community safe.


    Contact Tracing

    If you are infected with or have been exposed to COVID-19, it is imperative that it be reported to Human Resources (for employees) and the Wellness Center (for McNichols, Corktown and Riverfront students).

    If an employee or a student reports to you that they have symptoms or they have been exposed to COVID-19, request that they leave work or class and refer them to Human Resources or the Wellness Center respectively. Once HR or the Wellness Center is contacted, reported information will be documented and a recommendation will be made.

    A proactive measure that all employees and students are highly encouraged to do is to simply track who you interact with daily.

    This practice could assist if you or someone you interacted with were to contract COVID-19. A tracking log  (.xlsx file) is available here for you to log the people you have continuous and/or close contact with daily,  or find this app on the Michigan Department of Health & Human Services website.



    Per Gov. Whitmer's Executive Order 2020-147 the University is requiring all employees performing work on campus to wear face-coverings until further notice.

    Additionally, students, guests and contractors at all three campuses must also follow this guidance. This is an additional measure to reduce the spread of COVID-19 and is a supplement to social distancing, frequent hand cleaning, disinfection of work areas and common spaces and other everyday preventive actions.

    • A face-covering must be worn at all times when in any indoor public space and outdoors when unable to consistently maintain a distance of six feet or more from individuals.
    • Face coverings include a cloth facemask or face shield, completely covering your nose and mouth.
    • Office doors should be kept closed if possible when working. When six feet of separation is not achievable, face-coverings must be worn by everyone in the area.
    • Face shields will be provided to faculty for teaching purposes upon request.
    • An employee or student should provide their face-covering without wording, drawings or pictures that may be offensive. Face-coverings must cover the nose and mouth.
    • Face shields must be commercially manufactured and must completely cover the nose and mouth. Homemade facemasks are allowed.
    • If a face-covering is not feasible due to health issues or other functional work reasons, supervisors or employees should contact Human Resources and students shall contact the Wellness Center. Documentation is required.
    • If an employee or student does not have a face-covering, a mask will be available from the Department of Public Safety in the Student Union for McNichols students and the Associate Dean for Student Affairs for Riverfront students. The laundering and care of the face-coverings is the responsibility of students and employees.

    Putting on the face-covering/disposable mask:    

    • Wash hands or use hand sanitizer prior to handling the face-covering/disposable mask.
    • Ensure the face-covering/disposable mask fits over the nose and under the chin.
    • Position the face-covering/disposable mask properly with nose wire snug against the nose (where applicable).
    • Tie straps behind the head and neck or loop around the ears.
    • Avoid touching the front of the face-covering/disposable mask throughout the process.

    Taking off the face-covering/disposable mask:    

    • Do not touch your eyes, nose or mouth when removing the face-covering/disposable mask.
    • When taking off the face-covering/disposable mask, loop your finger into the strap and pull the strap away from the ear, or untie the straps.
    • Wash hands immediately after removing.

    Care, storage and laundering:    

    • Keep face-coverings/disposable mask stored in a paper bag when not in use.
    • Cloth face-coverings may not be used more than one day at a time and must be washed after use. Cloth face-coverings should be properly laundered with regular clothing detergent before first use, and after each shift. Cloth face-coverings should be replaced immediately if soiled, damaged (e.g., ripped, punctured) or visibly contaminated.
    • Disposable masks must not be used for more than one day and should be placed in the trash after your shift or if it is soiled, damaged (e.g., stretched ear loops, torn or punctured material) or visibly contaminated.

    Facility Modifications

    The following modifications and changes have occurred at Detroit Mercy on the Riverfront, Corktown and McNichols Campuses:

    1. Directional signage is hung in applicable stairwells, hallways and building entrances.
    2. Air hand dryers have been replaced with paper towel dispensers in restrooms and other locations.
    3. Some restroom sinks have been taken offline when 6 feet of separation is not possible.
    4. Water fountains have been disabled; bottle fillers are still available.
    5. Desks and chairs in classrooms have been marked and separated with 6 feet of separation.
    6. Hand sanitizer stations located in all campus buildings is forthcoming.
    7. Interior doors are propped to reduce touch points, if they are not fire-rated. To determine if a door is fire-rated, contact Facility Operations at 313-993-1240.
    8. Floor signage has been applied where applicable.
    9. Sanitizing wipes are available in all classrooms and shared spaces for use on furniture, workspaces, and commonly touched items such as handles, etc.
    10. Plexiglass shielding has been installed at transaction areas where 6 feet of separation cannot be maintained due to the function of the space.
    11. Capacity signage has been installed at restrooms and elevators.
    12. Quarantine area has been identified for our resident students, if needed.
    13. HVAC systems have been adjusted to increase outside air in buildings.
    14. Directional traffic in various buildings and areas, including Dining Services, has been mapped out.
    15. Self-served food areas have been suspended until further notice.
    16. Communal flatware dispensers are not available until further notice.

    In your workspaces, be sure to:

    1. Implement and manage social/physical distancing (at least six ft. spacing) for employees working near each other.
    2. Create plans to identify and close spaces for 24-hours in anticipation of a deep cleaning if a symptomatic student, employee or visitor is identified.

Monday, Aug. 3, 2020: Return to Campus

Employees necessary to be on campus to support fall term operations. Please contact your supervisor for guidance.

  • Remote Work: Employees who can work remotely to fulfill some or all of their work responsibilities may continue to do so to reduce the number of individuals on campus. Remote work arrangements must be approved by the immediate supervisor and may be a full or partial day or week schedule as appropriate.
  • Alternating Days: To limit the number of individuals and interactions on campus, departments should schedule partial staffing on alternating days. Such schedules will help enable social distancing, especially in areas with large common workspaces.
  • Staggered Reporting/Departing: The beginning and end of the workday results in employees entering or exiting at common points. Staggering reporting and departure times by at least 30 minutes will reduce traffic in common areas to meet social distancing requirements.
